Rationale

Rationale
Hannah Christensen

Through research, I discovered that the stress of student living has led many students to fall into a fast food cycle and practice bad eating habits. Although students would like to gain cooking skills and recipes they feel like cooking is a chore and can't spare the time, money or effort to cook a meal. My big idea is to provide an educational tool for students that challenges the preconceptions that fast food is cheaper, quicker and tastier than home cooking. I have achieved this goal by creating The F Word Campaign which is a humorous play on the letter F relating to food, flatting, and the three 5’s and because students “can’t be fucked cooking dinner tonight”.

The F Word campaign teaches first time flatters 5 minute recipes using 5 ingredients. This appeals to students because it is a cheap and quick alternative to fast food and acts as a catalyst to inspire students to cook regularly. I have developed a bold, bright and colourful design style using funky illustrations to attract the attention of students. There are 5 stripes in the background representing the “five” concept and also show speed as they look like racing stripes. The casual script font represents the rush of hand writing adding to the speed narrative.

The posters generate excitement and awareness of the campaign and promote the cooking class. The cooking class takes place the first week of every month and is used to inspire students to cook. They will learn 5 easy recipes, 5 minutes each using 5 ingredients. The meal kit is given to students after the cooking class. It includes the 5 recipes and all the ingredients used so that students are motivated to recreate the recipes at home. The app makes recipes accessible anywhere anytime. The app is used to sign up for cooking classes, inspire students to cook and assist them with recipes. Ongoing cooking classes and the app will help motivate students to continue cooking and teach them skills and recipes they can apply at home to stop them falling back into the fast-food cycle.

The F word targets 3 ways to wellbeing, keep learning, connect and be active. Ideally, The F Word will help students change their eating habits, recognize the benefits of cooking for their wellbeing and incorporate this into their daily routines as much as possible.

Week 12 Tuesday

Today was our last class before presentations! We just spent the class working on our projects. I spent most of the class working on my dossier which I have almost finished.

I also designed the banners and cooking class material. It was harder than I thought it was going to be to mock up the actual class so it looks kind of like a joke but I think that adds to the humour a bit.

Week 11 Friday

Today in class we are getting near to the end so everyone is just working hard on their projects.

These are my final posters I think they really capture that young, funky cool style that is attractive to uni students. They're bold and bright and demand attention, not passive.

Week 11 Tuesday

Today in class I got thrown a bit of a curveball. My tutors thought my design style was too passive and the pastel colours didn't represent my projects values and gets lost in the crowd. It needs to be bolder and shout at you, more vibrant and loud. Considering I have finished most of the design part of the assignment I feel very stressed now as I basically have to change everything to suit a new style. Not the best start to the week as I still have so much to do with the added pressure and stress of redesigning my whole visual style.

So I started off by playing around with colour to make it more vibrant and bold as lots of other food posters use vibrant colours. I also was trying out different fonts that have a more bold look. I like the ombre effect with the stripes because it gives the impression of speed. I have also made the lines thicker and 5 of them to represent the "5" theme.

Week 10 friday

Today we had an interim presentation. It was good to see how everyone's projects were coming along and to get some constructive feedback from my group. It was very positive and they responded well to my designs just have to tweak a few changes here and there. The other groups had done a lot of work but I am by myself so I feel I was at the same level. I need to start thinking about my presentation a bit more but it really depends on how much time I have left at the end.

Notes I took:
Like the aesthetic
Says the design style was very consistent across everything
Few tweaks on the poster
Hashtags pop more
Text could be vertical rather than horizontal
Try hashtags sans serif

I think they look much better in the sans serif font and they are more noticeable. I like both the bold and the regular however the bold stands out a lot more. I also wanted to try quote marks around the F to see if it made it more obvious but I think its clear enough without. Im still exploring different places for the text to go but I think it looks best where I have it originally.

Week 10 Tuesday

Today in class we just were working on our projects.

I have refined my posters some more and have been trying to place more information on my posters but am struggling a bit to find a place for the words to look good. I have tried a few iterations but am still unsure where the best place to put them would be.
